Soccer-Chopra joins Tendulkar-owned team in new Indian league
(Adds quotes, details, byline) By Sudipto Ganguly MUMBAI, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Former Newcastle United striker Michael Chopra was picked by the Kerala Blasters, co-owned by cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar, in an international draft for the upcoming Indian Super League on Thursday. "When the drafts came up, the first name that caught our attention was that of Chopra," former England goalkeeper David James, marquee player and manager of the Kerala team, told reporters. "We immediately decided to have him and are happy to have him in this team." Chopra, who has also played for a host of other Premier League clubs, was the only English player in the draft, which was held at a Mumbai hotel overlooking the Arabian Sea. Former Manchester United midfielder Bojan Djordjic has joined other marquee names such as former Juventus striker David Trezeguet and former Arsenal winger Freddie Ljungberg in the first season of the football league.
Leicester City-Chelsea Preview
After surviving an early scare in their Premier League opener to a newly promoted club, Chelsea will try for a more controlled start in their home opener against another newcomer this weekend. The Blues came from behind to beat Burnley 3-1 on Monday evening, and welcome Leicester City to Stamford Bridge on Saturday for the clubs' first top-flight meeting in over a decade. Two Chelsea off-season arrivals made an instant impact in Monday's victory at Burnley to help the club to a comfortable result after an early scare. Diego Costa leveled the scores in the 17th minute after the ball rebounded to him off the post, while Cesc Fabregas marked his return to the Premier League in creative fashion with a wonderful assist for Andre Schurrle in the 21st minute and another set-up for Branislav Ivanovic in the 34th.
West Brom-Southampton Preview
Though Southampton and West Bromwich Albion each fell short of earning a victory in their Premier League openers, both sides feel there's much to build on going forward. The Saints will be looking for a third straight victory over West Brom in their home opener on Saturday at St. Mary's. Daniel Sturridge's go-ahead tally from Raheem Sterling in the 79th minute Sunday stood up for Liverpool and sent Southampton to a 2-1 loss at Anfield last week.
Burnley F.C.-Swansea City Preview
Swansea spoiled Louis van Gaal's Premier League debut with Manchester United by posting a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday. Gylfi Sigurdsson netted the match-winner in the 72nd minute, culminating the build-up of a cunningly quick re-start by Wilfried Bony after he was fouled in the middle of the park.
Wondolowski lifts Earthquakes to tie with Sounders
Just four days after the worst loss in franchise history, the San Jose Earthquakes were just looking to get back on the field. Chris Wondolowski tapped in a point-blank shot midway through the 66th minute on Wednesday night as the San Jose Earthquakes pulled out a 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders. The Earthquakes (6-9-7) were coming off a 5-0 loss at home last Saturday to FC Dallas. ''To be quite frank, it was very embarrassing,'' said Wondolowski, who scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season and seventh all-time against the Sounders.
